Hilltown

Standing Stone

I had a feeling the field would be full of crops before I reached Hilltown and the feeling proved to be a good one. This 1.03 metre high monolith was standing almost defiantly amongst the hay. The granite stone is aligned North-South and is probably as wide as it is high. Too many standing stones in Wexford have disappeared over the years, so It is nice to confirm the existence of this stone. Situated on private land 250 metres to the northeast in Ballytrent townland is a large double banked rath believed to be a ceremonial enclosure.

Situated: Heading south from Tagoat on the N25 take a right turn for Lady's Island. After 2.5 Kilometres take a left turn for Ballyhitt. 500 metres the road swings left. Stop and go right for Ballytrent strand (straight on). The megalith is about 1.5k down here in a field on your right.
